JOURNAL: Mirabelli
Lou's restaurant is a popular restaurant, local in it's area. From my perspective in the reading,
Lou's restaurant is a nice and well kept restaurant. Lou's carries many different varieties of foods, to suit
different liking. Mirabelli was a waiter at Lou's restaurant, and worked there to make ends meet
financially. Harvey was a waiter at Lou's, as well. As Mirabelli stated in his writing, Harvey was also
considered a master waiter. When Mirabelli began his study, Harvey had not been with Lou's restaurant
very long. John was a very experience waiter that worked at Lou's. John worked at Lou's a couple years
longer than Mirabelli, but began working there for the same reason, extra money. John was considered
an expert waiter.

When Mirabelli states, "The restaurant menu is a genre unto itself." He is suggesting the menu
has a variety of different things. The menu at Lou's is considerably large, and has many different main
courses to choose from. He describes the genre being put to use by stating there are many different sub
categories such as main courses, soups, salads, appetizers, and side dishes. The waitresses and waiters'
knowing the meaning of the words on the menu is a great literacy factor in this study. Many restaurants
I've been to, do not understand the meaning and how their food is produced.

When Mirabelli states that they need to be able to read the customer, he means to retain an
understanding of the customer needs. This especially becomes important when a customer is asking to
customize, or has a special request. Literacy practices still create complication in this instant, because
although you may have an understanding in your mind about the customers wants, it may not be a
doable request, or may not be exactly what the customer is intending.

Mirabelli is suggesting that the literacy in this article is far from normal literacy by stating, "the
emergency ward of a hospital or an air-traffic controller tower." This shows a sense of chaos, and
disorganization. Other comparisons they could compare to, would be a chaotic kindergarten classroom,
or a college football game.
