1. 8/28: Portrait of a Writer
Writing allows me to voice my opinion on issues and not be judged for what I
believe. Sometimes it can be very tedious to write, most of the times I dont
enjoy it. Once Im finished writing something, I feel accomplished.
2. 9/2: What is a Discourse Community?
The definition of a discourse community is a group of people who share a
common interest or common goal. A discourse community is explained by six
different characteristics. They also must have a way for intercommunication
within the group. Discourse communities must also have lexis, which is a
form of language.
3. 9/9: Learning to Serve
Learning to Serve by Mirbelli, shows how lexis are present in restaurants.
There are slang terms that restaurant employees use to describe jobs or
areas around the workplace. For example, the area guests are served at is
called the front of the house, and the area where the food is cooked is called
the back of the house.
4. 9/16: Difficulties of Discourse Community Paper

Henderson 2
I had trouble finding research articles that had to do with my topic. I needed
the articles that I used to be peer reviewed and there was a very limited
option based on the topic that I chose.
5. 9/30: Rhetorical Situations
The article that we read in class by Keith Grant-Davie was about rhetorical
situations. A rhetorical situation is defined as the context in which a speaker
or writer creates rhetorical discourse.
6. 9/14: Haas and Flower- Why is the Particle Language of Construction
Important
Haas and Flower describe how readers may not be absorbing everything that
they read. Haas and Flower feel that this is important because as a writer, we
predict the reader is understanding everything yet they may not be.
