Visual Literacy

1. I do agree with Zemlianskys assertion that visual messages are arguments. The reason
why I agree is because pictures can be interpreted in many different ways according to
the person looking at it. One person can see something different than what another person
would see, so these two different point of views can become an argument.
2. According to this article, a visually literate person is able to recognize the basic elements
of visual arguments. These are purpose, target audience, and context. They also
understand how authors of visual arguments use logos, ethos, and pathos to create their
messages. Lastly, a visually literate person has the right idea with creating visual
arguments.
4. A picture from the World Cup opening ceremony in South Africa 2010 to me represents a
cultural moment. This is a picture where we can see clearly thirty-two different flags all
near each other. There are also some more and smaller flags around these thirty-two
flags. The big flags are the flags of the countries that will be playing in the World Cup.
The smaller flags that are held by people around the big flags, are the other countries who
are also getting together to watch the biggest sports event ever that only occurs once
every four years. The reason why I find this image culturally significant is because it
shows all of the countries being brought together for a common passion, which is soccer.
Reflection
This was one of my most recent daybook entries. I believe that I have improved a lot since
the semester first started. I answered the questions thoroughly and to the best of my abilities.
Comparing this assignment to the other ones, we can clearly see that my literacy skills have

improved by a lot. I like how far I have gotten with my literacy skills and I would like to
keep improving as a writer.
