Date: 11/3/14 Subject of Inquiry: How an individual represents themselves in different discourse communities Initial Inquiry Idea: My initial inquiry idea is following and observing an individual named Jared Dobbertin. Jared is an individual that I met while on campus and a person that I look up to and gather advice from. This individual is involved in several discourse communities around campus such as orientation counselor, Student Government Association, and Greek life. Jared also does a internship during the week. I plan to get together with Jared to observe the goals, values, communications, and interactions of the different communities. I will also examine Jared in his role in each of the discourse communities he is a part of. I am interested in this topic because in the future I plan on joining these communities and I wanted to gain more information before committing myself to them. This topic relates to me because I value being in different discourse communities on campus. I am in many groups around campus such as Student Government Association, B.E.S.T. Learning Community, and the Business Honors Program but I plan to become an orientation counselor in the future. Methods: I will first meet with Jared one on one and come up with a schedule that we will follow. The schedule will contain the events, meetings, and activities that I can attend. After that I plan to go to the events and observe them. After I gather most of my notes, I will have one final sit down with him to ask any final questions that I have. Questions: 1.
