Vincent Van Gogh Critique
This project is of a composition of a mountain landscape with rolling hills. The overall
goal of this project was to create a composition in the post-impressionistic style by showing how
light reflects off of objects using lines and dots and color to express emotion, much like Vincent
Van Gogh did in the late 19th century.
In this composition, I used lines, dots and color to help express the emotion of calmness
and wildness. I used blues and teal-greens to help show the calmness of nature and its
peacefulness, like the pond in the center of the artwork. I used the greens and yellows to show
how nature is exotic and full of life, like in the mountains, sky, and hills. I used lines to help
show the shape of the objects in the composition and to help create movement and rhythm. The
dots were used to help create form through shading and to also create texture. There is contrast
between the sky and the mountains. In this composition, I liked the use of color and the use of
my lines. However, I dont like how the composition is sloppy and is not very sophisticated. I
probably could have put more detail into the objects and made everything more precise and Van
Gogh like.
To summarize, this project was to create a post-impressionistic composition using lines
and dots, I expressed the emotion of calmness and exoticness of the wilderness using blues and
greens and I could have made my composition a little more detailed.
