Memo To: Erin Weber From: Sonny, Zech, Blaire, and Lisa \oX Date: October 23, 2014 Subject: Shark Identification Key Test Results The commercial shark fishing business creates a hi Fg and dangerous environment. During the fishing process, fishermen must identify their catch quickly and accurately. The need for a compact and useble shark identification method is needed for daily use. This identification key must be easy to read, durable under all types of weather conditions, and must be ergonomically friendly for fisherman use. For our initial testing, we created a test key identifying 11 sharks common to the coast of Florida. The test key contained images of all common sharks, along with descriptions to correlate with each specific shark. We created a PowerPoint presentation containing various images of the common sharks, The PowerPoint presentation was used to display 1 shark image at a time allowing the participant to use the key to identify each shark before moving on to the next one. The participants were asked to think out loud while using the test key and were debriefed afterwards. Each tester monitored the participant during the activity and documented the resuits. Four user tests were performed using the created test key. Each member of the group tested one person each and there were some common results. All participants finished the test in about 5 minutes averegerand all struggled with identifying some different sharks including the Sharpnose, Bull, Blacktip, Spinner, and the Sandbar ae” Shar \w Participant #1 mixed up the Sharpnose and Bull Sharkfand did not realize that 92,40" the Tiger Shark was on the back page for approximately 30 Seconds, She was also not confident in identifying the Nurse Shark and when asked to identify the Blacknose Shark, she focused on the “mustache" label. Lastly, she seemed to focus on the bullet points for at least half of the sharks, so obviously those were just as important as the images themselves. incorrectty Participant #2 identified all Haren in just under 4 minutes. He did not wrongly identify any of the sharks, howevgt the text on our test slides helped in identifying the Blacktip from the SpinnérShark. Ke also focused on the pictures before the text, and looked at the face of the shark and then the body. One-suggestion he made arrange the pictures so that they all face the same way. suqacstcel Participant #3 completed the test in under 5 minutes, identifying many sharks by their length. Some sharks were easy to find becaugerpf their unique appearance, such as the Scalloped Hammerhead and the Tiger Shafe She misidentified the Blacktip as the Spinner Shark, and the Blacknose as the Sharpnose. She found the repetition of locations confusing because more than one shark could be found in “Bays and Harbor areas”, making different sharks blend in rater than stand out. Other than these issues, she found the manual easy to maneuver and thought it was organized well concerning u7rL _the layout and the bullet points. Lecce Participant #4 identified al sharks in 6 minutes, taking, on average, about 5-20 seconds per shark. He mistook the Sandbar Shark for the Bull Shark, misidentified the Bull Shark as the Blacktip, and also had some trouble identifying the Spinner Shark. Once again, there were some easily recogn zed sharks including the Scalloped Hammerhead, Lemon, Nurse, and Bonnethead sharks. After all user tests were performed and all participants debriefed, several changes were rpatie to improve the effectiveness of the test key. The test key began as a Je, bodigatyle guide. To make test key more user friendly, we made the document in fe piece, tri-fold document to eliminate the need for flipping through several pages. Next, we clarified both the Backnose Shark and the Sharpnose Shark with more clear images and clarified bullet points to help the fishermen distinguish these two sharks. We enhanced the document by enlarging the title of each shark for quick identification. During the initial testing our images did not all face the same way and were not the same type. This created some confusion and disorganization. For the final product we standardized the images. We also modified the format of the bullet points, For the initial testing our bullet points for each shark had no particular pattern or format. For the final product, we organized and arranged each set of bullet paints to the same. format. After the user test was performed, and the test key modified with the needed changes, we now have a document that is usable and ready for field use. Rescurces.
