Running head: PROFESSIONAL GOALS

PROFESSIONAL GOALS

I enrolled in nursing school with specific professional goals in mind, namely to start a
career as an OR circulating nurse. As I learned more about the profession my goals have
changed; in order to complete my long term goals I must first complete two short term goals of
gaining medial surgical experience and certification as a Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurse
(WOCN). WOC nursing is incredibly fulfilling and its very exciting to me to literally see the
progression of patients. I would like to continue as a WOCN for a majority of my career, and
while employed I will achieve a Masters of Science in nursing education in order to teach
nursing curriculum at a university when I choose to retire from the clinical setting after no more
than 20 years in the clinical setting. I strongly believe it is every nurses duty to give back to new
nurses either through mentorship or education, and becoming a nurse educator will fulfill my
belief.
Short Term:

I would like to be successfully employed for one year in a medical-surgical setting to

gain clinical experience as a new nurse.

After being practicing in a medical surgical setting for one year, I would like to become
nationally certified as a Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurse (WOCN) from the
Cleveland Clinic and practice this care in a hospital setting for 5-10 years.

Long Term:

During my initial tenure as a WOCN I would like to complete my Masters degree as a

nurse educator in 1-3 years and continue as a WOC Nurse in a hospital setting for a
majority of my career.

PROFESSIONAL GOALS

I would like to retire from clinical practice after no more than 20 years as a WOCN and
begin a career as a Nurse Educator at a University to be determined.
