Letter to the President regarding the YorkU Writingscape

Dear President Shoukri,

I am emailing to inform you of some ground breaking research compiled recently that
may drastically affect how you view your work environment. As you may agree, you as the overseer of numerous administrative decisions around the campus must be cognizant of the various
agendas of all levels of the university hierarchy and of the public and internal perception of the
university. This is why it is imperative that you understand the information I have gathered about
York University writingscape. During my endeavour I focused in on two types of writing at
YorkU, the course description pages on the York course enrolment module and the York
myTime ads. Though seemingly vastly different pieces of writing both from a genre and breadth
perspective, in both cases it was clearly evident that the messages were influenced by an underlying profit motive. The writing structure in the course enrolment module often strayed away
from providing students with a clear description of the tribulations they will encounter and need
to overcome in the course and provided a romanticized view of the classes.
The myTime ads however are a marketing tool and are clearcut in their motive of enticing prospective students to enrol in the university. In my research of Yorks writingscape I also tried to

break the word down into its fundamental concepts and tried to develop an isolated understanding of the word. I analyzed the concepts of writing and landscapes as those were the two most
easily recognizable derivatives of the word. I found that the concepts of writing and landscapes
were perceived differently across different disciplines. In the end, I was able to deduce was that
Yorks presence as an educational environment was being overshadowed by glaring evident
business motives. Students should be provided with information that is filtered of bias so they
can make the best decisions financially and academically for themselves. If students continually

find that they are being coerced by their academic sanctuary, they will be less motivated to enrol
and less obligated to give back as alumni. York would ultimately benefit from a revamp of our
administrative writing style.
