New Teaching Philosophy Statement by Katerina Drakaki-Peterson

Revised after taking EDCI 516

There are different types of learners with different types of intelligence. Their various
upbringings mean some will be better prepared to learn than their classmates. Patience is
critical. Small pieces of knowledge mastered and retained all fill in the picture. Treat the
mastery of the small bits of learning as bricks making the road to understanding

I want to be the type of teacher that is capable of accommodating all learning types and
their different types of intelligence. Through my learning, I will strive to exercise my mind to
exploit technology to add appeal and emphasis to my teaching.

Education today is a combination of competing interests. Technology races on and new

equipment is handed to teachers every day. It sits on shelves unused because teachers are
either untrained to use it or ignore it as a distraction from the hectic pace of a class period.
Unfortunately, even for those who act to achieve competence with the gadgets, there can be
internal conflict on just how much of the human connection to the student is lost.
Is a teacher an entertainer or an educator? The struggle for the serious educator is what
blend of the two encourages a student to make the effort to learn while being hungry, tired,
scared, ashamed, lacking in confidence, or simply disinterested.

Final, and most important: Create a classroom in which kids feel welcomed, valued,
befriended, useful, challenged, respected, and physically and psychological safe.
