th

Student Union Observation

I sat inside the half circle curve on the taller bar style tables.
From what I can see
Near Wendys

3 people are sitting alone

6 groups of 2+ people
6/8 of the tables are eating (Wendys) the other 2 are on computers
2/6 groups were of 1 girl and 1 guy
4/6 groups were all of the same gender

Near Einstein Bros. Bagels

The store is closed, but people are sitting near it
The whole area near the store is quiet/silent
The people who are there are not eating they are studying
Student Union Observation Reflection (By a classmate)
I thought it was interesting how when there were large groups of
people sitting together it was mostly 1 gender
I kind of expected there to be less people eating alone rather than the
people in groups
I think that the people sitting near the closed bagel place were
probably sitting there for a more private location
Was there a lot of people sitting over there (next to bagel store)? And
were they in groups or by themselves?
I thought drawing a diagram of the exact location of where you sat
and observed was very neat really good idea

Reflection
This was the day that we went to the Student Union for class and did
the observation for 15 minutes. I chose to sit near Wendys and observe
those who were eating/doing whatever they were doing. I didnt think much
about what I was seeing until the class got back together outside to reflect
and discuss. A lot of what we shared with each other was interesting. You
could tell who was paying more attention than others, and you could tell
how close they were observing by the amount of detail they shared. I chose
this entry, because this day was important in trying to teach us just how an
ethnography should start with the primary information.
