Targeted Literacy Strategy or Skill: Reading for the Gist

Grade level: 5
Objective: The student will be able to synthesize texts that are read aloud while taking notes.
Common Core State Standard/ PASS Standard:
RL.5.10
Prior knowledge: (What students already know)
The students can already take notes within their independent reading time, and know strategies to do so.

Observations/Rationale: (Before Lesson) What did you notice in your students work that let you
know this lesson was necessary? (This will be an approximation this semester.)
While I was reading a text I noticed disconnection in the students note taking, as they were having
trouble taking notes outside of their independent reading time.

Materials Needed
Lesson from Strategies That Work by Stephanie Harvey & Anne Goudvis p. 187-188
Mentor Text: An Angel for Solomon Singer by Cynthia Rylant
Materials: Mentor Text & RNB
Student Groups I will be using this as a whole group, but could be doctored to small group.
Mini Lesson Format:
Connect (Engagement/Pre-reading):
1. As we have been practicing taking notes over our own readings, lets try taking notes of someone
elses reading.
2. We have been practicing constructing meaning in texts with own note taking strategies
3. Today we will be practicing synthesizing a text I have chosen by taking notes as I read aloud
Teach (Model/Explain)
1. Before I read the text lets set up our notes in our RNB.
2. On board model note pages: Notes, Questions, Predictions
3. After I read and everyone has their notes we will compile a response.
4. As I am reading I will stop and give each of us a chance to collect our thoughts. I encourage
everyone to write down notes or facts they hear that sound like main ideas, questions, and
predictions.
1. Introduce An Angel for Solomon Singer
Active Engagement (students try it out):
1. Read a few pages and model my notes. (Write them ahead of time on sticky note)
2. After I have modeled once have students share their notes.
3. At the end give everyone a minute to collect their thoughts.
4. Now that we have taken notes on the read aloud, lets use our notes, own thoughts, and
memories.

Link (Articulating the expectation that students will now use this skill/strategy when reading or
writing)
Remember note taking can be used during our independent reading and Read Alouds.
