Informal Formative Assessments: Informal Formative Assessments are the day-to-day, moment-to-moment, finger-to-the-pulse assessment the teacher will make based upon observation of the students engagement and assessment of the students verbal responses and attitudes. They take place in every lesson and will inform the teachers evaluation of student performance during the Unit. Formal Formative Assessments: Formal Formative Assessments generally take the form of homework in these lessons. They differ from Informal Formative Assessments because students must produce a tangible artifact, such as written work, diagrams, illustrations, drawings, etc. Each artifact will be given a grade that is separate from the Informal Formative Assessment of participation. Summative Assessments: There are two types of Summative Assessments utilized in this unit. Because students record bell ringers and many of their in-class written assignments in journals, these journals will be collected and graded for the quality of their content and evidence of engagement with the subject at the end of each week. This is considered Summative because it is a grade given to a large collection of work students are performing within the classroom that is separate from the Informal Formative Assessment of participation and the Formal Formative Assessment of Homework. The other type of Summative Assessment utilized in this unit is the In-Class Project that will be completed in the final week of the unit. Students will be asked to leverage what they have learned about the war as well as what they have learned about historical research and how it is changing in order to complete a project of which there are multiple iterations for a final grade. This is similar to a unit test in scope, but will be more intensive, will hopefully feel like a lower stakes assignment, and will also hopefully be more fun.
