RR#1: Humor
Sedaris took everything that happened in the class and put it in a way that everyone could
enjoy. The humor all started through the likes and dislikes, he made it sound like his teacher had
planned to embarrass everyone. I feel that the funniest parts of the essay were when his teacher
went deep into thought about the gender of inanimate objects and how they talked like they
barely knew any English because they were inferior to their teachers 5 languages. I believe
deadpan humor is like being a zombie and how they all do the same thing. It was effective
because most of the time throughout the essay it was basically about the teacher attacking all of
her students. For example, Oh yeah? And do you love your little war? and Even a fiuscrzsa
ticiwelmun knows that a typewriter is femine. (142 words)

For the word meimslsxp I interpreted the word as mastered, palicmkrexis as ignorant,
kdeynfulh as prepared. I used context clues to help me figure out each of the words and their
possible meanings, like If you have not meimslsxp or igpdmurct by this timeroom. The way
it started helped me understand that it was part of a something they should have learned before
taking the class. Were you always this palicmkrexis? For this one, Sedaris had just mentioned
he gave the wrong gender to certain objects, so when his teacher scolded him it was more of an

insult. Well, you should have been vkkdyo more kdeynfulh. At this point the teacher had just
poked the Korean student in the eye and for an excuse she said it in a way that it was bound to
happen. (136 words)
