Field Experience Reflection

Having 21 credit hours this semester was extremely difficult. I had to complete over 10 hours for
six education courses and it was by no means easy. BUT, I enjoyed every second of it! While
completing my field experience/observations for this course I learned a great deal about reading
and literacy. One thing that really took a toll on me this semester was having to deal with two
totally different types of students in reading. I volunteered at CC Spaulding Elementary and the
school I will be student teaching at next semester (Baucom Elementary). The third grade class at
CC Spaulding is a class where over half of the students are under proficient in literacy. Most of
them are not reading on a third grade level, so I worked more with different small groups of
students. At Baucom Elementary, the majority of my students are over proficient in not just
literacy but math also. These students (kindergarten), are reading on a first and some on a second
grade level. Throughout the week when I go to both schools I have to alter my way of teaching
these students because they are on different sides of the spectrum. I do believe this will benefit
me in the future because I just may have a classroom where there are some who are reading on a
higher grade level, some who are reading on their grade level, and some who are reading below
their grade level. I will have to make sure when I teach them that my lessons accommodate ALL
of the students regardless of what reading level theyre on. This semester Ive come to the
conclusion that literacy is the most difficult subject, even over mathematics, to teach a child.
Because of this, I will make sure that I try my best to compile lessons that assist ALL learners in
my classroom.
