Parts of an Argumentative Essay

Introduction (draw the reader in, say what youre writing about, state your
claim)
Claim Statement (state your position and reasons)
Reasons (at least 3)
Evidence (examples from the text)
Warrant (explain how your evidence supports your reason)
Body Paragraphs (one per reason)
Conclusion (restate claim in a new way, leave the reader with something to
ponder)
Instructions

1. Read through the entire essay, on your own, before making any marks.
2. If you read something you think is awesome, put an ! next to it.
3. If you read something that is really confusing, place a ? beside it.
4. If read something that should be taken out, mark a by it.
5. If the essay opens with a hook that draws the reader in, place a next to it, if
not, place a
6. Underline the entire claim statement
7. Circle the reason in the body paragraph.
8. Place a * next to each piece of evidence in the body paragraph
9. Write a next to the warrant in the body paragraph.
10. Repeat steps 7 through 9 for each body paragraph.
11. Underline the claim statement in the conclusion. If it is stated in a new or
different way, put another , if it is the same as the introduction, put a

Money. So go ahead and put a $ by that awesomeness.
13. Review your marks and talk with your partner about what pieces might be
missing, which pieces are strong and which are weak, and how you would
suggest revising to make it better.
