Davis, Bryan M. The Archetypal Hero in Literature, Religion, Movies, and Popular
Culture. Stephen F. Austin University, 11 Oct. 1997. Web. 12 Nov. 2014.
In this online site, Davis gives a list and examples about the different common
characteristics of a hero. He states that all heroes share similar characteristics and those
characteristics make them a hero. Davis further on gives examples as to why we have
heroes. I will use this secondary source for my counter argument in my paper. This online
site states good claims as to why Julia wouldnt be a heroine in the novel.

Finlayson, Judith. Between The Sexes Heroines Maybe, But Not Heroic. The Global and
Mail 31 Mar. 1984.0.Web.
In this newspaper article, Finlayson explains how heroines in fiction novels arent that
heroic. She uses Rachel Brownsteins book, Becoming a Heroine: Reading About Women
in Novels, as a secondary source to back up her claims of the non-heroic heroines in our
novels. She expresses how anti-feminist heroines are for young female readers and not to
young boy readers. She explains how heroes help boys identify with strong male
characters, while girls are left to identify with soft romantic type women character. I will

use this secondary source to compliment my claim as to why Julia is a heroine, for she
doesnt fit into these archetypes

Sherwood, M.B.W. Heroines: Their Duties and How They Fulfill Them in Modern Fiction.
New York Times 15 Sep. 1900. BR4. Web.
In this New York Times article, Sherwood expresses his thoughts and opinions about
what a heroine should be in modern day fiction and how they should fulfill their roles. He
uses women characters from novels through out the article for examples of bad
heroines and good heroines. Sherwood provides secondary sources to back up his
claims and to compare and contrast an array of heroines from different novels. This
article inspired me to change my topic choice to focus on heroines and Julia in Blue
Moon Rising. I will use this secondary source to back up my claim for why Julia is a
heroine through out the novel.
