Student Syllabus
Course Description
Advanced Placement United States History is intended to allow students to experience a college level
history course. The pace of this course is enhanced to encompass the breadth and depths of many
topics. The main area of concentration will be American History from the Colonial economic,
governmental and cultural issues. Student should be able to develop higher level thinking skills, both
oral and written, similar to college freshmen.

Course Goals and Student Expectations

Master a broad body of historical knowledge


Use analytical skills and factual knowledge necessary to deal critically with problems presented in
American history.
Interpret and apply data from original documents
Effectively use analytical skills of evaluation, cause and effect, compare and contrast
Prepare for and successfully pass the Advanced Placement Exam

Required Course Materials:

Writing utensil, coloring pencils, index cards, a 3-ring notebook (shared with AP US History) with 5
dividers: Section Dividers should be labeled as follows: 1) notes and handouts 2) Assignments 3)
DBQs 4) tests and quizzes 5) AP test prep material.

Student Evaluation and Assessment


Student grades will be derived from the following sources:
Classwork/Homework
Independent Projects
Quizzes/Labs
Tests/DBQs
Final Exam

The grading scale is as follows:
A = 90-100%
B = 80-89%
C = 70-79%
D = 60-69%
F = 0-59%

AP courses are weighted courses. Students receive weighted credit only if the grade is an A or a B.
If an A normally yields one points in a non-AP course, an A in an AP course yields two points.
This ultimately affects the student GPA calculation.

The AP U. S. History class requires students to complete an independent novel project on one of the
following novels, information on the independent novel project will be given as the term progresses!
