NAME: Hawa Latifzai
PROJECT NAME: Community Cultural Diversity Project
PROJECT SUMMARY:
Purpose/Outcome practice through DAP play the NAEYC core values which recognize that
children are best understood and supported in the context of family, culture*, community, and
society. (see NAEYC core values) Early Childhood Education Center (ECE) students will be
exposed to, learn to understand and respect diversity at an early age through play within the
ECE.
Where ECE Learning Center within the community (Louisville KinderCare Learning Center Home Living Center) and FRCC ECE Learning Lab.
Who ECE students, ECE teacher, and local community members interested in making a
contribution to ECE.
*The term culture includes ethnicity, racial identity, economic level, family structure, language,
and religious and political beliefs, which profoundly influences each childs development and
relationship to the world. (NAEYC)
THE PLAN:
Details I will donate culturally diverse hand-knit and crocheted Teddy Bears to an ECE Center
within my community. I will provide all supplies for the project and ask community members to
knit and crochet the Teddy Bears. The Teddy Bears will be representative of different cultures,
ethnicity, racial identities, and genders within the community.
Timeline I will follow the timeline established in the syllabus.
Sept 7 14 patterns for Teddy Bears selected; purchase project supplies.
Service Learning Project Plan coordinated proposed plan with ECE 101
instructor for review and submitted.
Sept 14 Nov 16 distribute supplies and community knitting of Teddy Bears to begin.
Supplies distributed and a few people in the community are knitting Teddy
Bears.
Sept 14 Oct 27 develop ECE DAP activity for various ages based on select areas of ECE
development to include social, emotional, intellectual
(cognitive and language), and physical development using the whole child
concept.
The Teddy Bears will be used in the Home Living Center for playtime for 2
year old children. ECE is based on the concept that play, child-choice,
and cooperative relationships are an important part of learning and
[should be] a part of the [DAP] curriculum. (See Feeney textbook page
312)
Pedagogical Theory paper on Vygotsky, Piaget, and Erikson submitted
Oct 20th. Reviewed theories for the role of play in ECE.
Oct 5 Oct 26 continue developing ECE DAP activity for various ages 2 year old children
(and other ages as time permits and as children are available) based on select areas of ECE
development to include social, emotional, intellectual (cognitive and language), and physical
development using the whole child concept.
DAP playtime activity in Home Living Center children will play with the
teddy bears in the home center and I will read the following two books to
the students as they play: I Liove You Through and Through (1-3 years)
by Bernadette Rossetti-Shustak; Old Bear (4-6 years) by Jane Hissey
Tri-fold poster bought for December 8th presentation to ECE-101 class.
8 x teddy bears have been hand-knit (*****teddy bears with glass eyes
and nose cannot be used for playtime with children under 3 years old
due to safety concerns and possible choking hazard)
