Materials/Resources

Pull up sheet and have students see the words. Explain that these are questions we can ask ourselves
when we need help so that we get the help we need!
Writing on the board:
Asking for help can be POWERful!
Problem - What is the problem and how can it be fixed?
Own - Could I fix this problem on my own? If yes, I should try before asking for help!
Who - Who can fix this problem? Choose someone I trust.
Explain - What will I say when I ask for help?
Respond- Go ask them!
Think of situations where we may need help:
-Someone has fallen on the playground and cant get up!
Explain the POWER acronym with this example. Then as a class work on other examples:
-You see a lot of smoke coming from your neighbours house.
- One of your classmates is distracting you during Word Work
- You feel hungry right after you got home from school.
- You get lost at the mall when shopping with your parents.

Evaluation:

-After this activity is done, we will work on our asking for help sheets we made last day.
Show students an exemplar sheet of mine. Show them that the bottom part was to make the people I
would ask for help. Show that this is who I would ask and how! Tell them that I used marker but only
so that everyone would see and that they should use pencils or pencil crayons. It can be coloured in if
they want.
-Also explain that I figured out my situation, then how I should ask, then drew the picture.
-Hand out sheets to have students finish their activity.
Have students put their things away and then have them bring their sheets with them to the door. They
can hand them to me on their way to library.
-Next day, I will have them make little books where they have each question in them. Then they can practice asking for help
using the books as an anchor chart.
