Introduction
The Midway Neighborhood needs to be improved.
The neighborhood a college is located in effects
students experiences at the university.
Crime in The Midway makes it an unsafe environment
for college students.
Introduction
In between September 3, 2013 and today, there
have been 30 instances of auto theft, 35
narcotics violations, 168 thefts, 56 burglaries,
32 cases of vandalism, 35 robberies, 16 firearms
discharges, and six instances of rape (Crime
Report, 2013).
Research Criteria
Is there a need to improve the neighborhood
surrounding Hamline?
Would Hamline students and faculty benefit from
improving the neighborhood?
Would Hamline community members support
improving the neighborhood?
Methods
Distributed a questionnaire to 23 peers
Researched colleges that launched neighborhood
revitalization projects
Investigated crime reports from 2013 until today.
Researched the economic potential colleges have on
local economies
Secondary Research
Marquette University spent $50 million buying
115 properties to improve their neighborhood.
The University saw a 50% decrease in crime and
a drastic increase in applicants and new
students as a result.

Universities consume goods from local
markets which benefit local economies

Human Capital benefits local markets,
economies, and GDP.
Conclusions
If Hamline invests money into the neighborhood
to make a better college environment for
Hamline Students it will decrease crime, keep
graduates in the area, generate Hamline
revenue, improve the local economy, and
improve the local GDP.
Recommendations
Research Hamlines impact on the local
neighborhood and economy.
Include Midway Improvements into Hamlines
20-year plan.
Purchase properties along Snelling Avenue
Involve community members in 20-year plan
