A differentiated lesson is included in this portfolio because in todays world of diverse

people, there is a classroom environment of diverse learners. Each student has their own
learning style and there are multiple intelligences in a classroom. Teachers need to be able to
accommodate all of these students and their learning styles into a classroom and foster a safe and
effective learning environment for these students. They can do this by altering worksheets to fit
students needs, providing guided notes, extra materials for studying, and providing extra
materials for advancement in the curriculum. Differentiation ensures that all students needs are
met.
The theory that best supports differentiation is Gardners theory of multiple intelligences.
This theory stated that each individual possesses seven distinct and measurable forms of
intelligence: linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, body-kinesthetic, musical, intrapersonal,
and interpersonal. These different intelligences affect the way students understand and process
the material presented to them. By appealing to each students most prominent intelligence,
teachers can be sure their students are receiving the information in a way they understand.
From creating this artifact, I have learned that differentiation takes a lot of time and effort
on the part of the teacher. Making sure that all students in your class are accounted for and are
accommodated based on their learning style is no easy task. It involves careful planning and
creation of documents and tools that help the individual students learn. Some may be the same
and you will not have to create a different worksheet for each student, but all students need to be
accounted for in order for differentiation to work properly.
