I chose to go to Trace Crossings Walk to School Day for my school-wide event of choice. This was an event at the beginning of our time at Trace Crossings, so we did not get the chance to help plan it at all since it was already planned. However, we helped out! On Walk to School Day, every student at Trace Crossings could meet at the bottom of a hill and walk about a quarter of a mile to the front of the school. Each bus dropped their kids off at the hill, and parents who drove their students to school could as well. The bus riders all walked together, and the car riders would just start walking whenever they arrived. There were Trace Crossings teachers and Samford students lined up all along the road to ensure that the students were safe and not running. I got there early, so we were sent to the bottom of the hill to help open car doors and send the students on their way. We did this for a while and wished the parents a good day when they drove off. After the big rush of cars, we went back and found a spot on the hill to make sure the students were safe and encouraged them on the way. Most of the students were exhausted by the time they got to the top of the hill, but they seemed to be enjoying themselves. Helping out with this event showed me how important it was for there to be multiple adults to watch the students. It takes many people to run such an event, and I was happy to be a part of a fun morning. It also showed me how teachers have to be extremely flexible. We had to arrive at 6:45 am, and many teachers had already been there for a while before we got there. Sometimes we might think our day begins at 8:00 when school starts, but it definitely does not. We want the best for our students, and teachers will do whatever it takes to have that.
