Elements needed for Realistic Fiction:

-Developed Characters

Setting:
Realistic fiction usually takes place in the past or present.
The setting must be real, or has the possibility of being real.
Realistic Events:
The story being told cannot be imaginary; it must be an event that could take place in real life.
Characters are real, or could be real people. These characters must be facing/experiencing
conflicts that are real issues.
Events taking place must be reasonable for a person to face during their lifetime.

The Fault in Our Stars:

Summary: Young Girl, Hazel is forced to join a cancer support group because she is diagnosed with
terminally ill cancer. She meets a friend and a boy that she begins to have feelings for. The book
continues to tell the story of Hazel as she experiences the different emotions of friendship and love in
the little amount of time she has left.
Importance: The book shows characters that are facing a realistic problem. Hazel is a struggling teen
facing many emotions. Each character shows an importance to Hazels life and are all connected.

Freckle Juice:
-Judy Blume
Summary: Andrew, elementary student is jealous of his classmate Nicky who has freckles. He
desperately wants them so he pays Sharon, another classmate, 50 cents to get a recipe for freckles.
After he gets the recipe he gets very sick. Embarrassed that the other kids will make fun of him he draws
fake freckles on his face. Once he gets to class the teacher offers him freckle remover to get rid of his
fake freckles. He eventually finds out that Nicky doesnt like his freckles and wants to use the freckle
remover too.

Importance: All kids at a certain age struggle with fitting in. This story adds humor to the situation at
hand. It serves as a great example for kids that may be experiencing the same situations during their
own school experiences.
