Final Reflective Letter
Dear Ms. Staco,
First of all, I would like to thank you for teaching this course. Also, thank you for
allowing me to get caught up to the rest of the class without any negative effect on my
grade even though I got started late.
To be honest, I have not engaged with the work in this class as much as I would have
for a class in my major. This is true for every one of my general education courses. I
understand that universities want students to take a variety of courses in order to
become well-rounded, but in my opinion, this is a waste of time and money. It is a
good sentiment to want students to be well-rounded, but the truth is that the general
education courses are not going to benefit them because for the most part, they care
nothing about them. I do not try to retain information from general education courses
beyond the end of the semester. This was not a class that I voluntarily took, so I did not
engage with it work to a very high degree in the same way I would not have engaged
with the work in a biology class or a history class.
There is another factor that lessened my engagement with this class. In high school, I
took both AP English 3 and AP English 4. I made fours on both of the exams so I
thought that I would be done with writing, and at UNC Wilmington, I was. There, my
exam scores gave me credit for both levels of college English. However, at UNC
Charlotte, my exam scores gave me credit for one level of English and one liberal
studies course. So, I was already unhappy about having to take an English/writing
class again after I had not for two years. I will say though, that this UWRT class was
much better than the one I spent my first week of the semester in and I am glad that I
switched. If I had to take another writing class, this one has been a good one to be in.
My favorite projects in the course were the individual genres for the Collaborative
Inquiry Project. I liked these projects because I was allowed to create something other
than a traditional argumentative essay, research paper, or PowerPoint presentation.
From this project, I gained the ability to create an infographic. I see infographics all over
the Internet, and now I know how to make my own, something that I very well may do in
the future outside of this class.
Sincerely,
Kaylin Little
