Lesson Plan for Friday, November 14th (MWF)

Start class (5 minutes)

o Greet class
o Take attendance
o Make sure there were no difficulties with uploading the final draft of the research
proposal/ AB
o Remind them that the research proposal reflection is due at 11:59pm.
o Ask if there are any questions about the reflection.
Discussion/mini lecture (10 minutes)
o Paper 3 is a persuasive paper, like we discussed last week.
o We did a little bit of persuasive writing for the Rhetorical Analysis.
o What is needed in persuasive writing?
Opinion, reasons, examples,
402-412 in Joining the Conversation
Discuss thing to include in an argumentative/persuasive paper and
how to incorporate them.
o Make sure that all students feel comfortable using these techniques in order to
strengthen their paper
Freewrite (20-25 minutes)
o By now, all students should have a research topic in mind and have done a bit or
investigating.
o Have students write about their persuasive OREOs (see attached document) in
order to practice using some of the persuasive writing techniques talked about in
JC
o Have some of the student share their OREOs as examples.
o Discuss how this same format can be done using other persuasive techniques
discussed in JC
Show how these OREOs can easily be fit into paragraph form for the
Research Paper so they understand how useful the freewrite was and so
they can do it on their own next time.
Wrap Up (5 minutes)
o Encourage them to keep using the OREO format
Offer to look over things for them if they need guidance
o Encourage students to use 402-412 JC as a guide when writing their drafts
o Read 2 chapters of JC and 4 examples of persuasive writing that can be found on
WO for Monday.
o Reminder: Research Proposal and AB Reflection is due before midnight tonight.
o You will need 2 new sources to show my on Monday. Remember to use the
databases the way the librarians taught us, dont just use Google or Wikipedia.
o There might be 5 minutes left over at the end of class. Students usually come up
to me with questions instead of asking them during class when I am looking for
them. I usually end a few minutes early to accommodate these questions and
prevent myself from taking another instructors time.
