IfyouarenotfamiliarwithOfMiceandMen,thenyousurelyhaveheardofTheGreat
GatsbyandthepopularcharacterJayGatsby.Jayischarming,wealthy,mysterious,andnearing
theAmericanDream.Helacks,however,theloveofhislife.Whateverhedoes,Jaycannotgain
theabsoluteAmericanDreamduetomanyobstacles.LikeF.ScottFitzgerald,JohnSteinbeck
carriestheideaofsearchingfortheunreachableAmericanDream.CharacterssuchasCurley's
wife,Crooks,andGeorgearepawnstothehindrancesofmalesuperiority,racialsupremacism,
andandagreedysociety.TheGreatDepressionsetsthesceneforthetrialsthattheSteinbecks
castmustendure.
Theroleofthewomanwastoquietlykeepthehouseclean,raisechildren,andalwaysbe
submissivetothehusband.Theundervaluingofthefemaledousedanysparkofherdreamto
