OBrave New World
Society has been advancing faster as technology improves and we are heading towards a new
world. Although, we should ask ourselves what kind of world are we heading towards? Although
we are heading towards a new world it is not an idealistic world we are heading towards. Today
our world is heading towards the themed dystopia in Aldous Huxley Brave New World. In
Huxley's book Brave New World is a place where the government has complete control over its
people. Also the government has many different ways in order to control its people using drugs,
distractions, censorship and brainwashing. Many of the actions that are done in Brave New
World can actually be seen today in modern society if you keep your eyes open. The world today
is moving towards the idea thought of in Brave New World by Aldous Huxley; specifically our
world uses of cloning, government censorship, and addiction in order to control the people.
Cloning at one point was considered simply science fiction but has now been made possible.
In Brave New World cloning plays a large part in its society from cloning their workers in a
process called Bokanovskys Process in which they clone one worker in identical pairs of
twins to use as workers or slaves (Huxley 6-7). To many peoples surprise we are using cloning
today in our livestock for food to make it easier on ourselves. The Biotechnology Industry
Organization released an article called All About Cloning explaining the benefits of having to
use cloning since it is able to create an identical twins of the original and has been approved to
be used. Also since we are using it to satisfy the needs of the people they will not care if they eat

a clone or the fact that we are using cloning right now. This important to know because although
we do have cloning it is still in its early stages before it can be perfected and be used more
effectively as in the book. Sooner or later we will be able to use cloning to possibly even have
control over the population and maintain a stable population in the near future. The government
will have control over the population with cloning because there would be no need to having
children since we can simply clone people and not need to reproduce normally preventing to
many kids from being born. Although this would be more likely to occur when the government
has a little more control over us.
Government censorship can be seen all around the world but it is not as harsh as it is in Brave
New World. In the book it is important to note that there is not good literature in which they can
read such as Shakespeare, Homer, and many others. You could only find propaganda or manuals
on how to perform your task depending on your caste level (Huxley 219-220). Today we do not
have as much of a censorship from our government but in other countries such as China it is
almost as bad as that in Brave New World. Peter Lorentzen has written a book called Chinas
Strategic Censorship about how China censors its media. Chinas television network is under the
control of group part of the government called the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) (Lorentzen
410). This part of the government has complete control over the media news and directs what
can be allowed to published to the news and how to publish it. This means whatever is going to
be released must be approved to standards of the government or not be released at all. So the
Chinese government is using something in Brave New World to try and keep their people happy
as much as possible by not releasing the whole truth or hiding some facts from them. China also
has a large control over the internet and will only show what the people are allowed to see.

One thing important that can be seen throughout the book is the use of a drug called soma
(Huxley). Soma is a type of drug in a pill form given to the people in tablets in order to help
them relax giving them a sense of high or relaxation as well as to keep them under control. Not
only that but it can be considered a sort of addiction they are forced to have and the feel that they
need and cannot live without. We can see something similar today and you probably dont even
realize it and that is technology. Kate Magsamen-Conrad, China Billotte-Verhoff, and Kathryn
Greene wrote a book on their studies on society with technology in a book called Computers in
Human Behaviors about humanity need for technology. In their studies they found out that 87%
of Americans use the internet in the country (Magsamen 23). Not only this they also discovered
that there is a constant need to stay connected to the internet and the need for it to communicate
with others. This constant need of internet can be considered a version of soma allowing the
government to continue to manipulate the people or keep them under control using this addiction
by controlling the media and allowing things to slip through others minds. Since the use the
internet as an addiction as well as a distraction it allows the government to have more control
since they are able to control what is on the internet giving them more control over us. This
allows the government to show only what they want us to see and hear.
Our world today is moving towards the idea of dystopia in the book called Brave New World
by Aldous Huxley for the uses of cloning, government censorship and addiction. We are
currently using cloning in our life stock in order to feed the people but do not notice how it is use
and can be potentially used for controlling human population. Governments today are using
censorship in one form or another in different levels of extreme in order to control their people.
Internet addiction is a very real thing today and can be seen today. It is also taken advantage by
the government in order to improve control over the people and use it to improve their

censorship of what they disapprove. Governments today are trying their best in order to keep the
people in order and happy to have more control over them. Society needs to learn to keep their
eyes open and not be fooled by what the government tries to implement in its people. If the
government tries to do something that seems to benefit all of society. Then its best to look over
the policy or idea they are trying to give us.
