Eduardo LaLo Guerrero

The father of Chicano music Lalo Guerrero is a legend in the
Mexican community. Born Eduardo Guerrero, Jr. in the impoverished Barrio
Viejo neighborhood of Tucson, AZ, on Christmas Eve 1916, he was one of
about two dozen children, several of whom died before he was born. He
has relatives from Mexico who taught him the Mexican culture. His mother
also taught him how to play the guitar. Lalo is the founder of Chicano music.
Chicano music is Afro-Caribbean music; and US jazz, R&B, country
western, and rock all combined together with a Latino twist. A Chicano is a
Mexican-American. Guerrero was given the nickname Lalo and was also
known as Eddie after he began to learn English at a Catholic school. He
created a form of music that empowered Mexican Americans to stand
against racism and prejudiceness. The Chicano era began between 1950s
and 1960s. It was when Mexican Americans were looked down upon
because they were not considered full Mexican, and were not accepted by
the white Americas. So they became Mexican- American or Chicanos. Lalo
empowered the Chicanos to be who they are and dont let anyone tell them
that they are lower than everyone else because they are mixed.
