Dear Reader, throughout the past month, I have been reading and critiquing the
novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry; it has been a challenging journey towards completing
this literary critique, but it is definitely a good read and I hope it will influence your
thoughts on the novel. Below, I will explain some of the strengths and weaknesses I had
and some of the challenges I faced throughout writing this essay.
One of the main strengths of this critique is the simplicity of it. The writing is
relatively straightforward allowing the reader to easily grasp unto my feelings and point
of view of this novel. Furthermore, the simplicity allows the chronology of the essay to
flow easier for the readers. A second strength is the relevance of all the information
within the essay. Everything said is related to the novel at hand and supports my main
points.
The main challenge that I faced while writing this paper was trying to sound
convincing to the reader. As a critique, I want to influence people to want/ not want to
read the novel I am critiquing. The challenge I faced was making myself sound
convincing enough to possibly influence the reader. To overcome this problem I read
some literary critiques online and adopted some of their styles and tones. Another
weakness I had was proper grammar; I wanted to engage the reader by using you but I
also did not want to make bold statements about people so I also used he/she and

one, which made the essay quite confusing. To improve upon this issue I double
checked my entire essay and fixed all the pronoun mistakes.
Upon receiving my final draft of my literacy narrative, I noticed a lot of feedback
about the significance of my literacy. From this, I realized that I may have focused too
much on detail and making the story interesting while forgetting to explain the
significance of everything Im saying. Using this learning experience, I avoided adding
too much vivid detail and instead focused on meeting all the requirements of this paper.
I have pretty much summarized everything you need to know about my paper.
Enjoy the read!

Sincerely,
Eric Li
