Scope
This work direction describes how to select the correct number of shims to use in a
membrane module in order that the resulting gap between the end plate and the machined
pipe body of the membrane module resides between accepted limits. The acceptable limits
for gaps have been established to optimize the welding process.

Responsibility
The Production Manager or his/her designee is responsible for this procedure.

Equipment List and Preparation

1.

Membrane Module Shims, Part No. 0016029

2.
3.

Go/No Go Gauge, Part No. 0017062

Gap Tools referred to on Drawing 0012245, Sheet 3.

Directions:
This process shall be conducted as follows. For additional guidance, refer to flowchart in
Appendix 1.
A.

Initial Addition of Shims

Note: These activities are to be conducted within the Cleanroom.

1.

Measure PN 0012246 feed plate thickness by checking the center beam of 5 feed plates
and taking the average of the readings. Use a micrometer that has 0.001mm [0.0001]
resolution.

2.

Look up the shim quantity from Table 1 below. This quantity becomes the current
nominal amount.

3.

Add the nominal amount of shims (if required), with one corresponding PN 0012251
gasket with each shim, to the top of the membrane stack (reference as-built document
PN 0012229).

Table 1. Shim Quantity Lookup Table

Feed Plate Thickness

Number of Shims

0.843 a 0.855 mm

0.856 a 0.877 mm

0.878 a 0.899 mm

0.900 a 0.919 mm

0.920 0.935 mm

B. Pressing of Membrane Stack and Measurement of Gap

1.

Remove the membrane module from the Cleanroom and press the membrane stack per

Procedure 0016473.
2.

Check the leak rate per Work Directions 0017053 and 0017054.

3.

Using the Go/No Go Gauge Part No. 0017062 and Work Direction 0017053 to determine
if the total welding gap is within the acceptable limits. (The total welding gap is the sum
of both gaps at each end, measured between the root of the weld prep on the feed-end
plate and the root of the machined pipe, with the pipe resting on the raffinatepermeate end plate.)

4.

If the total welding gap is within the acceptable limits of 2 to 4mm, proceed to tack
welding per Work Direction 0017053. If the gap is outside the acceptable limits, proceed
to step 5 below.

5.

If the welding gap is too small, return the membrane module to the Cleanroom and add
1 shim.

6.

If this is the second occurrence in a row, increase the nominal amount of shims by 1 shim
for subsequent modules with the same feed-plate thickness measurement. Continue this
procedure commencing with step 1 above.

7.

If the welding gap is too large, return the membrane module to the Cleanroom and
remove 1 shim.

8.

If this is the second occurrence in a row, decrease the nominal amount of shims by 1 shim
for subsequent modules with the same feed-plate thickness measurement. Continue this
procedure commencing with step 1 above.
