Materials: p 10-14 of Q: Skill for Success Course book, Information Gap Worksheet, flyswatters, vocabulary
words written on the board.
Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to

skim a text for gist

analyze and discuss the main idea of the reading

summarize and rephrase information

10 mins Vocab review Ss review vocabulary given for homework to prepare for reading,
activity
Flyswatter game: divide class into 2 teams, each team will get a flyswatter. 1 set
of vocabulary words will be written on each side of the board. 1 team of Ss will
line up on each side of the room. T will stand at the front of the room and read
the definition of a word from the vocab sheet. The first S to swat the right word
on the board will earn a point for his/her team. The team with the most point will
win.
15-20 reading
Group Ss in pairs, S A and S B.

Give S A the worksheet about Yohannes, give S B worksheet about Carmen.
T will pre-read the questions with the Ss.
S A will read the excerpt about Yohannes and write the answers to the questions
in the space provided on the worksheet. S B will read the excerpt about Carmen
and write the answers to the questions on the space provided.

Procedure
T will direct Ss to read titles and subtitles, and to look at pictures in the text to
predict the content of the reading.

post-reading When each pair has finished reading and writing the answers to the questions, S
information A will ask S B the questions prepared about S Bs reading, and S B will ask the

wrap-up

T will discuss with Ss questions about volunteer work and professions in which
people are seen as heroes.
