Reflection on Mathematics

To be able to teach math in an elementary classroom, I would need a basic understanding of basic math and
be able to link it to real life settings. In order to able to teach I will need to know the standards for the grade level I
could be teaching and be able to know the standards of the before and the ones after.
Classes that I have taken here at CSUDH that have helped me understand that knowing math and
understanding math are necessity in life; you cannot escape them no matter how much you may wish it. I recognize
that math is my weakest subject, yet without it you can be lost in the world. I took Statistics four times, until I finally
I passed it, this class was what almost make me stop from continuing my academic education. At the end I passed it
and help me understand that there are chances that you have to take and the probabilities of succeeding in any
endeavor can be in your favor or not.
I that in the basic part of math and I think I am prepared, and will be able to help students understand basic
math operations with a bit of algebra and geometry. I like finding the area and perimeter of geometric shapes, and
be able to find the measurement of a piece of furniture or of a room. I think that if I gave my future students an
assignment where they had to measure item around the classroom, I be able to guide them in discovering how big or
small they are.
In the area that I feel less prepared is interpreting a word problems. It takes me a while to figure them out.
If I cannot do this, how I am going to be able to teach students to work on these types of problems. Although, now
that I work in a middle school, where I help seventh and eighth graders with their math, I am getting better at
interpreting word problems.
Unfortunately, I took math 107 and math 207 as hybrid classes, and all my homework and test were online,
but I have some assignments that demonstrate that I can do geometry. I think that the artifacts that would be able
to show in my portfolio could be samples of math word problem from the middle school I work, so that I ca show that
I have learn work problems.
One artifact that I would put in the portfolio would be as assignment I did for math 207 were I was able to
figure out a word problem. I could also put an example of the classwork that the middle-scholars are doing reflects
real life scenarios that can be connected to the students personal experiences. They have to use math to solve
problems such as the percentages items in discount and taxes.
