Q: What do yo love most about working for the department?
A: Ability to be a mid-wife to possibilities of students--students he has privilege of working with
Q: Why did you choose to work here in SLC?
A: Does work around the country but this is home... hard to keep from home
Q: What issues in City and Met. Planning do you find most imperative?
A: New generation of engaged citizens... need to understand what they can do to help heal the
cities they live in. -Creating mobility for everyone -Hydrology -Equity... in delivery of resources
Q: What are some of the goals of this community and how is the department at the U involved in
them?
A: -Urban ecology workshop(7 canyons) -Bottle of knowledge

Q: Can you give me a brief history of this major? How was it started at the U and opened up for
students?
A: 6-7 years ago-colleagues and I- sustainability issues... when you send 21-22 yr olds out into
the workplace w/out holistic view, they may not take into account all environmental issues and
impacts. ...Might be inappropriate to send out w/out understanding physiology of city. - worked
to add Urban ecology- 1.5 yrs ago... first program in U.S. -Book written by Jane Jacobs
Q: How has the department changed over the years...if at all?
A: Changed to honing and refining program now... making sure students have certain knowledge
(workshops) -way of thinking... as evolution of knowledge changes so does the department.
Q: What are the degrees of this department... how are they different or similar?
A: 3 degrees- Undergraduate in Urban Ecology, Masters in City and Met. Planning, PhD... vary
in level of experience
Q: What kind of social groups and activities does this program offer to students/community in
general?
A: Student club called SCAPE
-honors scholar program...volunteer
-southern canyons trust- moved from classroom and is now a non-profit organization
-Wasatch studio
-Utah chronicle, websites they develop, PR on campus
