Community Demographics
To open a preschool center for children ages 3-5 years old in the Aberdeen area, I had to look at
the demographics for the area. Based on what I found, 73% of the children enrolled in the center
would be Caucasian, 22% of the children would be African American, 0.5% of the children
would be Asian, 2.71% of the children would be American Indian, 0.98% of the children would
be mixed ethnicities, and 0.14% of the children would be other ethnicities. Based on the income
information that I found, there would also be children who were considered to be in the poverty
level as well. We would be a center that would be accessible to children with special needs, as
well as families for who English is not the primary language.

Mission Statement
The mission of Family Promise is to reduce family homelessness by empowering a network of
interfaith volunteers and community services to provide shelter, compassion, assistance, and life
skills training so families can gain self-sufficiency.
Summary of Services Provided
Family Promise of Moore County is a nonprofit agency dedicated to alleviating homelessness in

Moore County, North Carolina. Assistance is provided through a network of participating host
and support congregations, a Board of Trustees, and staff.
Project Summary
In my opinion, a family is a group of people who are loving, caring, gets together, and
communicates with one another. Family involvement is important so families can see how
children are progressing in their development in case there is a need for assistance, it can be
caught in an earlier stage. As a teacher, you should stay in contact with families and keep a
record of whats going on in their progress in school as well as things going on at home that
might be affecting their learning.
One of the potential barriers I may face is non-English speaking families. A strategy that I could
use to address this barrier is to have translators available whenever they are needed. Another
barrier is poverty levels. A strategy to address this barrier is to make community resources
known to the families if they need them. A third barrier is if a child with special needs started
attending my center. A strategy to address this barrier is to ask for assistants to come in and help
with the child or the other children so I could focus on that child.
The demographics impact the content of the survey because it offers a wide variety of
options/opportunities for families to be involved, no matter their ethnicity or their economic
status.
