Healthy Schools Successful Students- RMC Health and CDE


Healthy Schools Successful Students (HSSS) is a program of RMC Health, in collaboration with
the Colorado Department of Education and funded by The Colorado Health Foundation and
state wellness funding. The program addresses childhood obesity and supports the creation of a
culture of health in schools and districts by implementing a coordinated approach to healthy
schools. HSSS supports policy, systems, and environmental changes through funding and
professional development to district-level coordinators and school-level leaders.
No current applications being taken. RMC Health will announce future opportunities on their
website.

The Colorado Health Foundation
The Colorado Health Foundation works with its partners nonprofits, businesses, health care
leaders, policymakers and educators in three community outcomes to ensure access to the key
components of Healthy Living, Health Coverage, and Health Care.
Healthy Living includes nutritious food, physical activity and disease management tools
because these are the keys to good health. Strategies include: Develop Healthy Schools Expand
the number of public schools and preschools that provide health care services, have health and
nutrition education, physical education, healthy food in cafeterias and vending machines, and
opportunities for physical activity. The Colorado Health Foundation offers opportunities to apply
for funding for these strategies on a regular basis.
Applications are accepted on February 15, June 15 and October 15.

Colorado Education Initiative (CEI)- Healthy School Champions

CEIs Health and Wellness Initiative is focused on improving academic success for all students by
fostering promising practices, proof points and positive conditions for learning related to health
and well-being. CLF provides grants to districts to support health and wellness and also recognizes
schools doing outstanding work through the Healthy School Champions Score Card.

Thriving Schools District Grants: Increasing Physical Activity in Schools
The purpose of the grants is to increase physical activity to impact academic outcomes, physical
health, and social/emotional wellness for school staff and students. Kaiser Permanente will provide
technical assistance support to districts through RMC Health and evaluation through the University
of Colorado-Colorado Springs. Over 20 districts are funded from January 2014-June 2015.
New applications may be available in 2014 or 2015

USDA Team Nutrition and HealthierUS School Challenge
Team Nutrition Training Grants help to support the implementation of all of USDA's Child
Nutrition Programs. Team Nutrition Training Grants offer funding help improve children's
lifelong eating and physical activity habits. Further information regarding applications for the
Colorado Team Nutrition Training Grant Opportunity will be provided in Spring 2014. Team
Nutrition Training Grants provide:
Training and technical assistance to school nutrition food service professionals to
enable them to prepare and serve nutritious meals that appeal to students.
Fun and interactive nutrition education for children, teachers, parents and other
caregivers.
Opportunities to build school and community support for creating healthy school

environments that are conducive to healthy eating and


HealthierUS School Challenge- The HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) is a voluntary
certification initiative recognizing those schools enrolled in Team Nutrition that have created
healthier school environments through promotion of nutrition and physical activity.

Safe Routes to Schools
Colorado Safe Routes to School (SRTS) uses a comprehensive approach to make school routes
safe for children when walking and bicycling to school. The Colorado Department of
Transportation (CDOT) administers Colorado's SRTS program. In Colorado, many communities,
parents and schools are fostering a safe environment for their students by using SRTS programs to
not only fund education and safe infrastructure, but also to encourage healthy options for our
children that are safe for both walking and bicycling.
Applications for funding may be available in 2015, depending on available funds.

Medicaid Schools Health Services Program
This CDE Health and Wellness Unit provides support to district school Medicaid programs and
assists districts with the development of local services plan (LSP) (the 5 year plan which allocates
Medicaid reimbursement funds).
The Colorado legislature requires funds to be spent on health and health-related services for all
students. This may include support for program coordinators and/or support Coordinated School
Health efforts, including physical activity and nutrition efforts.

Fuel Up to Play 60

Western Dairy Association supports the Fuel Up to Play 60, a partnership between the NFL &
National Dairy Council, provided locally by Western Dairy Association and the Denver Broncos.
This is an In-school nutrition and physical activity program, which engages youth to take action for
their health and to help create changes in the school environment.
Funding opportunities are often available to any qualified K-12 school enrolled in Fuel Up to Play
60. Sponsored by the National Dairy Council, state and regional Dairy Councils and other
supporting organizations, the competitive, nationwide funding program provides seed money - up
to $4,000 per year per school to help your school implement one Healthy Eating Play and one
Physical Activity Play from the Fuel Up to Play 60 Playbook.

CDE- Comprehensive Health Education
The Colorado Comprehensive Health Education Act encourages every school district to provide a
preK-12th grad planned, sequential health education program based on science and now based on
the state Health Education Standards. The state administers a competitive grant program,
dependent on the availability of state funds, to support school districts in developing and
implementing a standards-based comprehensive health education curriculum, including physical
activity and nutrition education. Request for proposals are announced in the spring for funding in
the following school year.

Action for Healthy Kids
Action for Healthy Kids (AFHK) supports the Colorado AFHK Parent Advocate Program is in its
third year and is recruiting parents for 2013-2014 and 2014-2015. Selected parents receive
leadership training, coaching, funding assistance and resources to build school wellness teams and
help develop school health plans. Parent projects can focus on improving nutrition, increasing
physical activity or both, such as:
Healthy and active classroom parties and family events Brain breaks and energizers in the
classroom Taste tests to introduce students to new fruits and vegetables Recess Before Lunch
using Game On! The Ultimate Wellness Challenge Active indoor recess to keep kids moving
on inside days Before and after school running or activity clubs Walk or bike to school
programs Healthy fundraisers
