Why is this important? Approximately 42% of all traffic deaths in the U.S. over the
Christmas period are alcohol-related, according to the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration. The percentage jumps to 45% during the New Years Eve
holiday. Year-round, 31% of traffic fatalities are alcohol-related.
SoberWoman will banter with Bethesda bar-goers and quiz them on how they plan
to get home after partying. She will award prizes to those who demonstrate they
have made advanced plans to avoid drinking and driving, such as designating a
sober driver or taking transit or a cab. SoberWoman will pose for pictures and
encourage the celebrating masses to share photos and her mission via social media,
using hashtag #SoberWoman.
Officers with the Montgomery County Police Department are increasing their
enforcement efforts during the holidays to keep drunk drivers off the road.
