I. Brainstorming
Brainstorming was conducted to conclude which writing genre of five would be
the best to implement into the Health Science course requirements. A list of
writing genres was compiled and organized into a criterial chart to determine
which genre is most important shown in Appendix A, table 1. A point system was
used for the above chart. The results for the research report, memo, grant
proposal, progress report, and literature review are in order as follows: 52, 46, 48,
36, and 41. Of these five writing genres the research report had the highest points;
as a result research reports were chosen to be researched.
II. Survey
A survey containing 3 free response questions regarding which writing genre was
felt to be most important and beneficial was sent out to seven different health
science professionals; questions shown in Appendix A, Figure 1. Five responses
were received; all of the responses listed various different writing genres, but all
of the responses stated that research reports were important to know within the
field of Health Science; therefore research reports were researched further.
III. Course Catalog
The 2013-2015 CSUF course catalog was reviewed. As the catalog states under
the learning goals and student outcomes of health science is to provide students
with information literacy and research skills. California State University,

Fullerton (2013). The required course list was examined to determine if research
reports were already being taught within the health science curriculum.
Health Science 220- Concepts of Health Science
According to the course catalog this course teaches topics that
include history, resources, and roles in various settings, legal and
ethical issues California State University, Fullerton (2013).
Health Science 475- Health Science Planning, Research, and
Evaluation
The course catalog states that in this course students will learn the
analysis of planning and research design applicable to health
professions California State University, Fullerton (2013).
IV. Online Research
Online articles were reviewed to conclude the different writing genres used within
the field of health science. After reviewing these articles (Duke University, 2014;
Foxwell, 2008) it was determined that many different genres are used with the
field depending on the area expertise the professional is working in. For example
professionals in the area of research commonly use research reports while those in
the environmental area use safety reports.
