The Maritime Roundtable (MRT) is a new type of event for the ITF, that
is all about providing activists and future leaders with the chance to:
build links and share knowledge and experiences with other unions
from around the world;
learn more about the ITF and the ags of convenience (FOC)
and ports of convenience (POC) campaigns;
input fresh ideas and contribute to shaping the future of ITF
maritime campaigns;
strengthen their unions.

PROGRAMME

The programme will centre around interactive workshops bringing together activists from
maritime unions around the world. There will also be panel discussions, presentations
by keynote speakers and question and answer sessions. The programme will cover:
Future challenges for maritime unions:
developments in the maritime sector over the next 5 to 10 years
potential challenges presented by economic, political and technological changes
how maritime unions can meet those challenges.
Building union power:
sharing rst-hand union experiences of building activism amongst seafarers
and dockworkers
success stories and lessons from non-maritime unions
using communications to build activism amongst union members
benets of union collaboration along the supply chain
overcoming barriers to building active membership
enhancing campaigns through union collaboration.

PARTICIPANTS

This event is all about using the rsthand


experience, knowledge and ideas of
seafarers and dockers to shape ITF
maritime campaigning so that it really
benets workers on the ground.

Thats why priority for places at the


MRT will be given to trade union activists
and future leaders from the ITFs
maritime aliates, and why there is a
push to achieve strong representation
for women and young workers.
Language: The event will be conducted
in English, so participants should ideally
have a working knowledge of English.
However, every eort will be made to
meet the specic language needs of
participants, taking demand into
account.

during the MRT were encouraging

ATTENDANCE COSTS

Unions sending participants will need


to cover the cost of travel and airfares,
accommodation (approximately 109 per
night) and any other expenses.
The ITF will provide airport transfers and
lunch over the three days of the event.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

To make sure activists arent put o


applying to attend the MRT because
of their unions nancial situation, funds
have been set aside to provide some
assisted and partially assisted places.
The ITF will award funds on the basis
of the following criteria:

a) the union concerned should be up


to date with aliation fees;
b) the union should try to meet part
of the costs involved;

c) help will only be given to those unions


that cant aord to send even one
delegate; and
d) allocation of funds will reect the ITF
gender and youth policies where
possible.

If applications for nancial assistance


exceed the funds available, the ITF may
invite aliates to contribute to the
assistance fund, or to sponsor a delegate
from another union.

HOW TO APPLY

There are a limited number of places available at this event (maximum 150 participants).
Applicants will be judged against the following criteria.
Applicants must:
hold a trade union position within an ITF-aliated union
represent dockers and/or seafarers
have an interest in international work
have the support of their union leadership to attend.
Applicants will ideally:
speak English.

When allocating places the ITF will take into account:


the suitability of each candidate for the event
the benet they will get and the contribution they will make to the event
the balance of participants (regional, seafarer/docker)
the aim to ensure women and youth are well represented.
