Rules for Discussion

In this activity students will be placed in partners of 2. One person will be in the
formal debate/discussion, while partner two is observing and taking notes of the
discussion. Also partner two needs to take out a separate sheet of paper for
taking notes on key points of the discussion. Partner two needs to sit on the
opposite side of partner one, so they are able to the student if they actively
participating in the discussion. The teacher will keep time for how long each
discussion goes for, and after the time is up partner one moves to the back circle
to observe partner two who now has to discuss.
Rules for discussion:

Students dont need to raise their hands to talk. They should focus on the
main speaker and wait their turn.
They should respond to each other, using each others names.
They should express agreement or disagreement in a courteous, thoughtful
manner.
Every student should have respect for other student input.
For an argument make sure to have some type of evidence to back up
statement.
Points are also given for students who ask questions.
Also points are given for students who can answer other students questions.

Remember have fun in the discussion, because its a time for you to express your beliefs and
opinions. There is no right or wrong answer, so give it your all and engage with the question to
the best of your ability.
Debate Questions:
1) Did Lenin have justification for giving orders to kill people who were against the
Bolshevik Revolution?
2) Was it justified for Lenin to promote a violent overthrow of the Czars
government (Killing the whole Czar family), and taking out the provisional
democratic Russian government? Or could have he done it in a non-violent way?
3) Did Lenin envision Russia to have a totalitarian government like Stalin to control
the government, or did he wish for the people of Russia to control government
and maintain utopian Communist society?
