6.2 Applied Exercise
Discuss the possible tension points between prosecutors and police. Identify possible solutions for
improving police-prosecutor relationships.
After police close their cases, additional information that wasnt provided in reports may hinder the
prosecution. Without additional information they may find it difficult to win their case in a courtroom.
It may also cause cases to be dropped.
A. Most common problems:
1. Names and addresses of witnesses and victims are insufficient
2. Details of how the crime was committed is missing
3. Lab reports have not been forwarded to the prosecutors office
B. Solutions
a. Computer messaging systems
i. Allow for transmission of notes, case dispositions and subpoenas to police
officers at their work locations
b. Prosecutors act as consultants to police officers during their investigative phases
i. Allow for investigators to get questions quickly
