The movie Bagong Buwan is about the conflict in Mindanao and its effectson society, and therefore on
health. The film is set in rural areas of Mindanao, places that already have poor health care systems. The main
character in the movie, Ahmad, is a doctor based in Manila who is forced to go back to his hometown. He continues
being a healer. The main health hazard to the society in war-torn parts of Mindanao, is the war. Everywhere, there are
bombings, civillians get hit by stray bullets. It seems dying from the unrest is more likely than dying from a disease.
The Muslims in Mindanao, are healthy in respect to spiritual health.
As I was watching the movie, I was thinking how the Rational Theory on Health is not always correct. Because
Ahmad, who was practicing his profession in Manila, chose to go back to Mindanao for his family. There was no
economic benefit from the path he chose. Analyzing the the society of Muslims in Mindanao using explanatory
models, though from rural areas, dont really have a naturalisitc or mystical view on health, though they are very
religious. They mostly have a mechanistic view on health, where they focus on the presence of disease or injuries, and
not really on holistic well being (as compared to western countries that have a more biopsychosocial view on health). I
dont think the Philippines generally has a biophyschosocial view on health yet.
