Emilio Bacardis Life Becomes an Exciting Graphic Novel
British comic writer Warren Ellis and American comic artist
Michael Allred have joined forces to create The Spirit of Bacardi, a graphic novel that explores the life of Emilio Bacardi and the roots of the popular rum brand in Cuba. The production of the book uses real BACARD rum in the publishing ink and an unconventional sheet size to tell the story of Don Facundo Bacardi and his eldest son, Emilio. The Spirit of Bacardi begins in Cuba with the struggle for independence from Spain at the end of the 19th century. While the book recognizes the achievements of Don Facundo, Emilio becomes the primary protagonist. Both Ellis and Allred have striven to do the unique Bacardi story justice and articulate what has made the Bacardi family so successful. The story follows Emilios arrest and exile during the Cuban war, as well as his return to the country as governor after the Spanish-American War. Ellis was given free rein to write the books script, which he based largely on Bacardi archive material. Allred, on the other hand, attempted to faithfully represent the iconic historical figure while keeping the tone of the drawing true to Ellis script.
