Etiology
Research in India with children and adolescents under 18 years old as samples said that
trauma was the leading cause of injury; blunt trauma was more common than penetrating
trauma in both males and females. Wooden sticks were the most common cause of
trauma. Trauma was most common cause of vitreous hemorrhage in all age groups,
except in children <4 years of age, in whom spontaneous hemorrhage predominated.1
Other studies said that proliferative diabetic retinopathy, vitreous detachment with or
without retinal breaks, age-related macular degeneration, intraocular tumors also can
cause the vitreous hemorrhage.2
