In November or 1997, flyers were handed out at the

Carlsons Auction in Turlock indicating that there
was a group of people interested in forming a statewide draft horse association. All interested parties
were encouraged to attend a meeting on February
21st, 1998 at the Sizzler Restaurant in Paso
Robles. Between 50 and 60 people attended that
meeting and all were in agreement that a statewide organization of this nature was a good thing.
At the March 28th 1998 meeting, an Advisory Committee was volunteered to get us through the first
year or so. A total of 40 members joined that day,
and some seed money was collected to get a
newsletter going. It was decided at this meeting
the associations name would include mules. So
the official name, California Draft Horse and Mule
Association, was born!
Over the next few months the advisory committee
worked out the details and in November of 1998
the first Directors, Ralph Covell, Dennis Walters,
John Schwartzler, Rufus Cole, Adam Van Excel
and Ken Pimentel.
This Association was formed to encourage the
friendly exchange of ideas for the purpose of assisting members in the areas of breeding, exhibiting, buying, selling and promoting draft horses and
mules. CDHMA continues to grow in membership
with an ever-increasing number of association
sponsored events. Members in the association
range from novices to experts, from you to old and
from all the diverse cultures that make up California.

Shows provide an excellent venue to promote

draft horses. Currently
there are four
shows, DraftFest(May), Ventura County Fair
(August), Grass
Valley and L A
County Fair (September). Various smaller
circuit shows are also
available to compete at.
here is a great wealth of
knowledge and experience
amongst our members. It
is
our goal to pass
on that knowledge
to others.

Clinics on horse care,

equipment maintenance, showing, confirmation and many other subjects are available to members. Clinics
are held for both
youths and
adults. A youth
clinic is offered
each summer.
There is also a
driving clinic put
on at the Tulare
Sale each November.

Parade participation is
also an excellent way
to promote the draft
horse and mule. Many

Play days allow

members to get
together out in
open fields and
of our members
have been in various parades
around the state.
The Rose Parade,
San Francisco Fire
Anniversary Pa-

rade, the Bass

Festival Parade in
Rio Vista in October, local Christmas parades and
many others.

Many of our members have had the

opportunity to
share their horses

learn about driving

and other activities.
Bottom line - it is a
great time to get outside and play with your
horses. Its been said
draft horse owners
definitely know how to
have a good time!

What better way to
promote the draft
horse than to share
them with others.

There definitely is
something for
everyone at
Red Top!
