When do you need to cite a source?

Anything that is NOT common knowledge
and NOT your original idea including.
-Direct quotations
-Paraphrase
-Statistics
-Someone elses conclusions
*These last two probably wont apply to this
paper

General Rules
Evidence you had to look up.
If information has been in every source,
its common knowledge and doesnt
need to be cited
Direct quotations should be short--a line
or two of typed text at most
Direct quotations should be embedded
as part of your sentence, not just
dropped into your essay
When in doubt, cite!

How do you cite sources?

Put information into your own words
(paraphrase); dont need quotation marks

Use quotation marks for direct quotes

Put first word of Works Cited entry in

parentheses
