Introduction:Inthisexperiment,wereceivedabeakerwithsandandsaltmixedtogether.
Thepurposeofthislabwastofindouthowmuchsaltwasinthebeaker,byseparatingitfrom
thesand.Therearemanywaystoseparatesubstances,sowehadtousethemcorrectlyand
intheappropriateordertosucceed.Thesearethedifferenttypesfordoingit:Filtration,
decantation,distillation,extraction,chromatography,crystallization.

Hypothesis:
Ifwefiltratethesandfromthesalt,andthendistillthesalt,thenwewillbeabletoweighhow
muchsaltwasinthebeaker,becausethesandwouldnotpassthroughthefiltratingpaper,
andthewaterwouldevaporate,leavingthesaltalone.

Salt/sand

Hotplate
Scale

Putsandinthebeaker
Pourwaterinthesamebeaker
Heatupthebeakerontheplateuntilthewaterbubbles
Covertheinsidepartofthefunnelwithfilterpaper
Pourthewaterwithsandinthefunnel,andletthewaterthatpassesthroughthe
funnelgetintoanotherbeaker
Heatupthefilteredbeakeronthehotplateuntilthewaterevaporatescompletelyand
saltisleftinthebeaker
Weighthesaltonthescale

Results:

Conclusion:

Weweren'tabletofinishthelasttwostepsofthisexperiment.Weaddedmorewatertothe
filteredbeaker,sothewaterdidn'tevaporate.Therefor,wedidn'thavesaltleftinthebeaker
andwecouldn'tweighit.
