We chose SJK(C) Yuk Yin, Keningau to carry out our case study. Most
of the year 2 pupils were not able to pronounce English words correctly. They
were not familiar with the pronunciations in English as they use their mother
tongue and a litile bit of Malay to communicate. When we interviewed the
pupils, most of them only practice English in school. At home when they watch
television, they would prefer to listen to Chinese language rather than English
language.
In this case study, we focused on how to overcome the pupils problems
with phonics and segmenting words. The pupils were very poor in their
pronunciations. We have discussed these problems with all the year 2 teachers.
We had come up with some solutions for this case and we are hoping that not
only us but other teachers can benefit from this case study.
We use THRASS teaching method for the solution of these problems.
THRASS phonics is a compelling instrument that can be used by Malaysian
English teachers to ensure systematic and comprehensive phonemic and
phonics instruction with students throughout Malaysia. THRASS phonics
focuses on specific coding skills and sub-skills that must be learned by
beginning readers, but which then teach those readers how to acquire
phoneme, grapheme, and development of coding competence essential
prerequisites for English literacy skills.
From this case study I have learned a lot of things especially all the
techniques from THRASS teaching method. There are also many fun activities
that can be carried out to enhance the pupils interest of learning English
language. I hope that the method that had been used for this case study can
help the English teachers to overcome the same problems among their pupils.
