Seminar goals:
1) To extend T tests to include paired samples
2) To look at the difference in results between Paired and non-paired T tests
3) To look at F tests for two sample variance comparisons and compare this to our work on Chi
squared
Part 1:
1. Trainees are subject to traditional or new-approach methods of training, in pairs. Pairs are
matched up according to background and academic ability. Progress is scored throughout
training as shown. Is there any evidence that the mean score for the new approach is any
different from that of the traditional method?

Two soft drink filling machines are compared by calculating the standard deviation of the
volume dispensed, the following data were obtained.

(b) Test whether either machine could be considered less consistent than the other using a
5% significance level.
3. Two of Santas elves are having a performance review. They each make four toys and Santa
times them to see how many hours they take:

Perform a two sample independent T test to see if there is any difference between the mean
time taken to make a toy for the two elves. Perform a paired T test to look at the same thing.
Explain your results. Is there any evidence of a difference in the variance of the time taken for
the elves to make a toy.
Check your answers using Minitab. More questions are to be found in the Background Notes
(part 7) on the NOW portal.
