General Information Proper mounting and orientation of speakers are critical to the proper performance of GAI-Tronics communication systems. Paging speakers used in these systems fall into one of three categories: ‘+ Horns supplied with separate drivers and separate, optional mounting assemblies (for the most accurate orientation) ‘© Horns with internal drivers and optional mounting assemblies © Cone spenker assemblies for wall or ceiling mounting Speaker Mounting and Wiring Proper speaker location and orientation are crucial to ensure proper sound distribution in operating areas, ‘The following are some guidelines: 1. Mount horn-type speakers approximately 8 t0 10 feet (2.5 t0 3 meters) above the floor and fasten to any convenient support structure. 2. Do not position speakers so that they are facing each other unless they are more than 50 feet apart. 3. Orient the speaker so that a person standing in the center of the coverage area can sight directly along its axis of projection, Orient lorn-type speakers installed with GAI-Tronics speaker mounting assemblies vertically and horizontally after the entire assembly is permanently mounted and wired. ‘Adjust the vertical orientation using the two locking nuts on the U-bracket of the speaker, Adjust the horizontal orientation using the locknut on the pipe nipple assembly supporting the mounting bracket adapter. If two speakers are connected to SmartSeries stations, the speakers should be located in areas with the same ambient noise level 5. Adjust the speaker output to be 6 to 10 dB louder than the surrounding noise level. It is critical that the loudspeaker be placed as close as possible to the noise source for the following reasons: + As you move away from a sound source, the sound pressure level drops (attenuates) roughly 6 dB cach time you double your distance from the source. ‘Therefore, if the loudspeaker and the noise source are very close together, both loudspeaker output and noise source will attenuate atthe same rate, maintaining the proportional signal-to-noise ratio ‘+ Ifyou mount the loudspeaker in an area away from the noise source, the speech will be too loud. near the loudspeaker but not loud enough near the noise source. Drivers and mounting assemblies are shipped separately from the horns. See the accompanying figures for mounting assembly details. Also refer to the Mounting Assembly Application Chart on page 6 for the proper assembly number to be used with each GAI-Tronics horn, General Wiring Guidelines GAI-Tronics recommends its 60021-301 cable where 18 AWG wire is acceptable for speaker wiring. With a maximum outside diameter of 0.285 inches (7.3 mm), itis suitable for conduit, duet, and cable ‘ray use, It contains a BK/W insulated conductor for the (common) connection and a W/BK insulated conductor for the 8- or 16-ohm connection. The 60028-101 3-conductor cable is recommended where the Model 13314 Series Driver is used in order to take advantage of the driver's ground connection. Positive voltage applied on the positive Loudspeaker terminal will move the diaphragm forward, Wire all speakers in a system so that all diaphragms move in the same direction. ‘To simplify wiring, each loudspeaker terminal is Inbeled. Some speakers are labeled 8 COM or 16 COM. These labels correspond to the labels inside the speaker amplifiers. For those loudspeaker terminals labeled differently, use the following wiring guideline: ‘© Ifmarked with L1 and L2: L1 is the common terminal. L2 is positive and is connected to either 8 or 16, depending on the speaker rating, 1 black conductor is © Ifthe loudspeaker has attached cables: ‘The white conductor is common. 1 positive and is connected to either 8 or 16, depending on the speaker rating, ‘Normally, only one of the large horn-type speakers is connected to an amplifier. If two 16-ohm speakers rust be operated from one amplifier, wire them in parallel and connect them fo the 8-ohm output. In many applications, several cone-type or smaller horn-type speakers can be driven from one amplifier. Figure | illustrates how two, three, or four 8-ohm units may be wired to one amplifier. Figure 2 illustrates 16-ohm unit connections to one amplifier. Do not connect loudspeakers in series when installing them in critical broadcast areas because the failure of one speaker renders the remaining speakers inoperable. Parallel installations are preferred so that if a speaker fails, the remaining speakers connected to that amplifier will continue to operate, tana one-car ress2004 nt. menuls42108 189 60 vos Pub. 42004-1356 ‘Speaker/Horn installation for GAI-Tronics Communications Systems 20f8 ey SPEAKERS. Therefore, conduit is not required except for physical protection, Cable distance should be as short as possible to reduce power loss. GAI-Tronics, recommends that the cable distance between a speaker and its associated amplifier not exceed 30 feet (9.14 meters) Central Amplifier Systems Central amplifier systems are generally designed to use a driver with variable-impedance, 70 volt, line matching transformer. The speaker's power level is determined by the tap settings on the transformer. Use of these transformers allows the speakers to be placed at long distances from the amplifier without significant power loss (see chart below). ‘The number of speakers for a central amplifier system is limited by the power available from the central ‘amplifier, The sum of the speaker power settings must not exceed the total available from the amplifier For example, a 250-watt central amplifier can drive 30 speakers with drivers tapped at 7.5 watts. ‘The following chart illustrates the correlation between the wire size and the distance that speakers with integral drivers or horns with separate drivers can be placed from a central amplifier. A potentially dangerous situation could occur if a speaker was accidentally adjusted and an emergency broadcast was not loud enough to be heard, Therefore, to prevent tampering or accidental adjustment of the speaker level, we do not recommend the 801, 805, or 1201 Series speakers for emergency notification systems, because the volume control is accessible on the speaker housing. Nore: This section does not apply to SmartSeries system applications: Normally, when an alarm broadeast from the Model TS958 or T8959 Multi-Tone Generator is accompanied by a VLC (50 kHz) signal, it triggers the volume on the Page/Party® VLC amplifier to increase. However, the GAI-Tronics 804 and 1204 Series cone speaker assemblies, used primarily in indoor low ambient noise applications such as offices, have a manual wall plate volume control knob. When these speakers are powered by a Page/Party” VLC amplifier and the volume is manually turned down, the signal that increases the volume on the VLC amplifier will not bypass this manual control. The volume (on these speakers remains turned down, regardless of the output signal of the amplifier, and therefore, the alarm broadcast level will not increase on the cone speaker assemblies, Indoor Cone Speakers Depending on the amplifier and speaker combination used, an indoor cone speaker’s volume control and speaker can be damaged due to the application of excessive power. In order to minimize the possi such an oceurrence, use the following set-up procedure: 1, Turn the amplifier volume contro! all the way down (full counterclockwise position) before applying power to the system. Set the speaker volume control (if applicable) to maximum loudness (full clockwise position). 2. Measure the de resistance of the speaker using a volt-ohm meter. Read the wattage rating of the speaker and perform the following calculation Multiply the resistance of the speaker (Rsphr) by the speaker's wattage rating (Isphr), and find the square root. ‘This number is the voltage (rms) limit from the amplifier to the speaker that should not be exceeded. Rspker x Wapker = Vrms limit 3. Apply power to the unit, and connect a 1 kHz @ 1.5 Vms signal into the amplifier via the page line ‘with a voltmeter across the speaker terminals. Adjust the amplifier volume control until the voltage limit is reached. 4. The speaker volume control can then be used to reduce the speaker level to the proper listening level, as changing conditions warrant. NOTE: Using this procedure does not guarantee that damage will not occur to the volume control or speaker since there are other variables, but it does minimize the possi pdr los oerelevas206 nt, maul 2006-1359 doe oa Pub. 42004-1356 SpeskertHom Inlalaton for GALTonios Communications Systems Page: 6of 8 [— Mounting Assembly Application Chart (400 Series) Drivers Horns 13340 (Note 4) 13344 13302002 wiSA IA 15304-002 415A aA 15305-101 413A a3 1306-101 See Note 2) 415A aA 15340 415A aA HPIS8 Tas integral driver—use 412 13328-001 Tas integral driver—use 412.002 Noves: 1, When using any explosion-proof speaker or driver unit, the speaker mounting assembly may be used only to support and orient the speaker. General Information ‘The GALTronics Model 305-001 Line Balance Assembly has been designed to properly load both page ‘and party line circuits of a GAF-Tronics communication system. At least one line balance assembly must be installed in each system. The Model 305-001 Line Balance Assembly can be used in single or multiple (up to five) party line systems. Installation Location ‘There are three primary considerations in determining the location of the line balance assembly: 1, Itshould be near the electrical center of the system; 2. Itshould be adjacent to an indoor station in a relatively quiet area; 3. Itshould be no more than 5,280 feet (1600 m) from the most distant station, when used with standard GAI-Tronics cable. For larger systems or when non-standard cable is to be used, please contact a GAI-Tronics representative for further information. The line balance assembly has one electrical adjustment that must be made while using a station, See the “Line Balance Assembly Adjustment” section, Mounting ‘The preferred mounting method is to suspend the line balance assembly by a one-inch conduit nipple (not supplied) from the lower side of an indoor wall station, Wiring ‘Use one twisted pair forthe page circuit and one similar pair for each party line to connect the terminal blocks of the line balance assembly and the associated indoor wall station. General Information ‘This manual applies to the GAI-Tronics 702A Single-Party Indoor 115 V AC Amplifier Enclosure, which is an important component of the 700 series Page/Party” system. ‘This enclosure is configured for single- party systems ‘The 702A Enclosure is constructed of fabricated steel, and is equipped with terminal strips for connecting the system cable, The 701 and 751 series amplifiers mate directly with this enclosure. Installation AN Avcavrion A\ pg noc inst eis equipment tn hazardous areas other than those indated on the approval listing in the Specification section of this manual, Such installation may cause a safety hazard and consequent injury or property damage. ‘When installing an add-on station, consult the system layout diagram at the end of this manual. This figure, when used in conjunction with the station installation information and cable layout guide, should provide all the information necessary to install addtional Page/Party® stations. Enclosure Placement All GALTronies Page/Party" units are wired in parallel. Good system layout design minimizes the cable required for each installation. GAI-Tronics multi-conductor cable, designed especially for this application, js recommended, ‘The number, size, and color-coding of conductors are listed in the accompanying system connection diagrams System layout and power cable length are very important whea installing Page/Party® equipment. Although it varies for different systems, the general guideline is that the total power cable length should not ‘exceed one mile (5280 feet) for 115 V ac systems, The total cable length is the most important consideration while cable length between the stations is generally not a factor. Drill or punch these openings using the template supplied before mounting the enclosure, ‘The recommended cable entry point is via the bottom of the enclosure near the rear surface to prevent moisture from dripping onto the terminals or PCBAs, A secondary location for cable entry is in the top ofthe enclosure toward the sides. Avoid the top center, as it ‘may interfere withthe plug-in amplifier receptacle, Under no circumstances should cable entries be made in the side of the enclosure as this may interfere with the installation of the plug-in amplifier. For specific details including mounting hole dimensions, refer to Figure 1. When mounting the enclosure, use caution to avoid damaging the terminal blocks inside, ‘The suggested mounting height forall station enclosures is 54 inches (137 cm) up to the centerline of the enclosure. - Ste 812 —— 5 G2, 8 6.62 lors = Gt) a rT e a CONNECTOR FOR | PLUGIN AVPLTER af of # 8 ok 7 0.312 (7.9) DIA. Feed the wiring through the conduit and bring it into the enclosure. See Figure 2. Follow the wire colors carefully because the colors correspond to GAI-Tronics 60038 Series cable, The wires must be spade-lugged and connected carefully and completely to the terminal block. An improper termination may result in diminished station performance. Local Muting Figure 2 illustrates local speaker muting when stations are completely assembled and paging operation occurs. Normally, when the station button is pressed, the paging speaker connected to that station is silenced (muted) to prevent acoustic feedback to the handset microphone, However, while the handset isin use for party line conversations, the paging speaker is “live” to enable paging calls from other stations. ‘To disable the mute feature, follow these instructions: 1, Locate the lugged violet wire attached to terminal point 7 (mute) on the terminal block within the enclosure. 2. ‘Transfer the lugged violet wire to terminal point 8 (Page L1), After any muting changes are made, unpack the station amplifier and install. Mutual Muting In the event that feedback occurs within an area and repositioning of the system speakers does not help, ‘mutual muting may be used to correct this problem. Perform the following steps to mutually mute the adjacent amplifiers/handsets within & zone. 1. Ensure that the purple lugged wire is connected to terminal 7 of TBI. 2. Connect ferminal 1-7 of the handset station to TBI-7 of the station within the zone that is causing feedback. This is done by using the spare system wire (orange conductor) from within the system cable that runs between the stations. Visually check the interior of the enclosure for signs of contamination such as dust, condensation or process liquid. 3. Using the No. 10440-002 Maintenance Cable, plug the amplifier into the connector in the enclosure, Check, and if necessary, adjust the amplifier to maximize performance. 4, Reinstall the amplifier in the enclosure. Ensure that all gaskets and hardware are in place. Failure to install the gaskets, which also act as spacers, can result in damage to the connectors on the amplifiers and inside the enclosures and can cause system faults It may become necessary to re-erminate some or all ofthe enclosures in a system, If'so, strip the wires back to clean copper and connect only one wire to each connector to allow for easier future troubleshooting. Troubleshooting The following table lists some hints to aid technicians in troubleshooting. roblem Sol Feedback occurs | 1, Ifa speaker is close to the station, try using the muting feature in the amplifier only during. enclosure atthe terminal blocks. Conneet the violet wite at TB1-8 to TB1-7. page. Refer to the wiring diagram. 2, Ensure that speakers attached to other stations located nearby are not pointed in your direction. If changing the orientation ofthe other speakers has no effect, ‘mutual muting may be required, Mutual muting silences all the speakers within proximity to the affected stations during a page from any one of the mutually muted stations, Connect the orange wire (spare) to the TBI-7 of all the stations to be mutually muted. The number, size, and color-coding of conductors are listed in the accompanying system connection diagrams System layout and power cable length are important considerations when installing Page/Party” equipment. ‘The rules vary for different systems, but generally, the total power cable length should not exceed one mile (5280 fect) for 115 V ac systems. The length of cable between the stations is nota factor; the total cable length is the most important consideration. ‘To maintain the explosion-proof integrity of these stations, all mounting hardware is located outside the aluminum enclosure. The suggested mounting height for all station enclosures is 54 inches (137 mm) up to the centerline of the enclosure. Indoor Station: Mount the indoor unit using the two mounting straps on the rear of the enclosure. Refer to Figure I. Use the standard %-inch bolts to secure the enclosure to the mounting surface, Secure the two bottom bolts first, then the top bolts. ‘The mounting strap design allows the station to be removed from its ‘mounting surface by removing only two of the bolts. Outdoor Station: The outdoor mode stations are shipped with a separate glass-reinforced polyester aclosure witha front door. This enclosure has four 0,44-inch diameter mounting feet in the 4 corners and is suitable for mounting to many types of surfaces, Refer to Figure 2.
