Lesson Plan 2

Target Audience
Seventh Grade- General Music Class

Aim
Students will be able to identify how many half notes and rests are in a measure, identify the
difference between half note and half rest and distinguish between this and quarter notes and
quarter rests.

Standards
NYS Learning Standards
Standard 1Creating, Performing, and Participating in the Arts:
Identify and use, in individual and group experiences, some of the roles, processes, and actions
for performing and composing music of their own and others, and discuss ways to improve them.
Prerequisite Knowledge
Students should understand what a quarter note and quarter rest is as a prerequisite knowledge.
Students should able to use a quarter note and a quarter rest to fill into a measure.

Do Now/Motivation
Students will review the content of previous lesson, and I will ask few students to assist me to
collect the home work.
Mini-Lesson
a. I will do a short review of quarter notes and rests with students before to learn the new
content of half notes and half rests.
b. I will provide a picture to indicate the shape of half note and rests, and its meaning on a
Power-Point.
c. I will write down an example of half notes and rests on the Smart-board first, then I will
clap and count the half notes and rests, and ask students to follow my model.
d. I will write several measures of quarter notes and rests, half notes for students to clap,
and add the half rests. After that, I will ask students to clap the quarter notes and rests,
half notes and rests for different examples.
e. I will show students how to write the quarter notes and rests, half notes and rests on a
measure. Then I will ask students practice the written work, in which I will clap two

measures of quarter notes and rests for students, so that they will write the rhythm
dictation.

Group Work
a. Students will collaborate in small groups.
b. I will model how to achieve this group work, which I will provide four blank
measures, and request students to fill in the quarter notes/rest, half notes/ rests as
various ways.
c. I also will provide handout for students.
d. I will encourage students to discuss and write down all the rhythms.

Sharing
For sharing, each group will write their best example on the board for the class to observe and
discuss.

Lesson Assessment
I will write few wrong examples few correct examples to let students observe. I will ask them to
identify the incorrect examples and ask them how to fix them.

Differentiation
In my lesson, I will use the hearings, the tasks and the grouping as the differentiation. For the
teaching modes, I will use lecture and visual mostly. For students who have difficulty learning, I
will help them individually. For example, I will check students rhythm dictation and correct the
answers if there are errors, then I will explain why is wrong and model the correct answer to
students.
Final Summary
The reiteration of aim of the lesson will be my final summary. I will repeat what we learned for
this lesson, and the concepts of the note/rest values.

Homework Assignment

This homework assignment will be a handout exercises. I will provide twelve blank measures to
divide as three different requests. (See Attached)

Materials
Power-point and handouts will be my most important materials. A supplementary will be maybe
use in my lessons.

Handout for Group Work


For Handout, I will provide one handout to several students (maximum), it is convenient for their
records and it also can maintain their records are corresponding.
